Why did firms decide (or decide not) to make the large and risky investments in
high-volume production of flat panel displays?
What was the importance in these investment decisions of factors like:
- the size of the firm;
- the R&D intensity of the firm;
- whether the firm was a producer of upstream or downstream products;
- the availability of skilled personnel;
- the ideas and attitudes of management; and/or
- the broader public policy environment in the home or host country?
What role did globalization of the industry play in the success or failure of firm
strategies and government policies toward the industry?
